How To Wear:
JEANS FOR WORK

Are jeans business casual? Can I wear jeans for work? and if so, what kind of jeans should I be wearing for the office? Our guide to office appropriate denim aims to answer these questions for you, with tips on fabrics and fits. Take a look at these outfit ideas for wearing jeans to work so you can look chic and smart for the office, without sacrificing style.

ARE JEANS BUSINESS CASUAL?

Yes, more offices are embracing a casual-professional vibe when it comes to work wear, especially on certain days, so it’s perfectly fine to wear jeans to work.

WHAT COLOUR JEANS SHOULD I BE WEARING FOR WORK?

If your office allows jeans you can never go wrong choosing a solid, dark denim jean with no distressing, no embellishments and a clean hem. Dark indigo or black jeans look the most pulled-together for work, though there are a number of smart coloured washes out there including dark grey and oxblood.

All of our denim brands offer a version of a clean black or dark blue wash which would be suitable for work. In J Brand we recommend our bestselling washes, Vanity (a super-saturated black) or Bluebird (the darkest indigo blue) for the office. Both are crafted with J Brand's Photo Ready fabric for a slimming effect with super shape recovery after being worn. Equally, AG offers sateen fabrications which are super stretchy and have a smooth, sleek finish more like a trouser; perfect for those desk-to-drinks days.

WHAT STYLE OF JEANS SHOULD I BE WEARING FOR WORK?

Skinny jeans are the most popular option for work. However, for those who might find it a challenge to style these body-fitting denims to look professional there are cigarette, straight-leg and wide leg options which work equally well. Nearly all styles are appropriate for business casual wear, as long as you pay attention to the fit and styling.

When it comes to the rise we suggest a mid or high-rise to keep things professional - and most importantly – comfortable, especially if you sit at a desk all day.

LOOK ONE

Cropped denim can look casual when dressed down with trainers so the key to making these styles office appropriate is to consider all the other elements of your outfit. We love J Brand’s Ruby crop in a clean mid-blue wash for the office as this jean has a slim, cigarette leg which won’t cling to the leg. We’ve paired this denim with a silk shirt from Lily & Lionel and a neatly fitted jacket from Helene Berman.

To feel polished for the workplace just add a structured blazer over the top to balance out more casual bottoms. A navy jacket is a classic choice and the Duchess blazer from Smythe is a true investment piece for working wardrobes. These jeans are the Ruby Crop from J Brand in bright white and we think the contrast between white denim and a chic navy blazer is timeless.

LOOK THREE

Straight and wide-leg denim fits are becoming more mainstream as people ditch the skinnies and reach for less restrictive jeans for summer. We suggest dressing up wide-leg jeans for the office by pairing them with a blouse in an on-trend animal print. Try wearing this ensemble on casual Fridays at the office with court shoes or mules. Blouses tucked into high-waisted jeans will elongate your legs, as will a clean, goes-with-anything indigo-blue wash like this pair from Paige.
